 How can I place a hold on a title? How can I have a title sent from one branch to another? 

 To hold a single title: 

  1. Search your library's COOLcat Catalog for the title you wish to hold.
  2. Click on the "Place a Hold" button to the left of the title, or at the top or bottom of the screen, depending on which page you are on.
  3. Fill out the hold form by entering your first or last name, your Library card number (you must have a valid library card), and the location where you would like to pick up your hold.
  4. Click on the "Submit" button.
  5. You will see a screen confirming that your hold was placed.
  6. If you get an error message, please refer to the troubleshooting section.

 To hold multiple titles: 

The "Add to Cart" feature allows you to place multiple titles in your "cart" and enter your personal information one time at the end of your search.

  1. Search your library's COOLcat Catalog for the title you wish to hold.
  2. Click the "Add to Cart" button to the left of the title, or at the top or bottom of the screen, depending on which page you are on.
  3. Continue searching and adding titles to your cart until all your selections have been made.
  4. Click the "View Cart" button at the top or bottom of the screen.
  5. On the Your Cart screen, click the "Hold Titles" button.
  6. Fill out the hold form by entering your first or last name, your Library card number (you must have a valid library card), and the location where you would like to pick up your hold(s).
  7. You may choose to hold all the titles in your cart by clicking the "Hold All" button. You may choose to hold only a few titles by clicking the check box to the left of the title for the titles you want to hold, then clicking the "Hold Selected" button.
 How do I cancel titles I have placed on hold? 
  1. Click on My Account on your library's COOLcat home page.
  2. Type in your first or last name.
  3. Type in the barcode number from your library card.
  4. Click the "Submit" button.
  5. Click on the "# Requests (holds) outstanding" link.
  6. Click in the box to the left of the title(s) you want to cancel.
  7. Click the "Cancel Selected Holds" button.

Warning: Clicking the "Cancel All Holds" button will cancel all of your holds. The library will not be able to retrieve the holds once they have been canceled.

 Frequently Asked Questions about Holds 

 How will I know when my holds are ready to be picked up? 

Your library will notify you when the title(s) you requested are ready at the pickup location you selected.

Springfield-Greene County Library patrons:

  • If you have given the Library your e-mail address, you will be notified by e-mail.
  • If you do not have an e-mail address, the Library will notify you by telephone (with an automated phone call).
  • If you cannot be reached by telephone, or you have asked not to be called, you will be notified by mail.

If you would like to change your contact information or the way you are notified of holds, please call (417) 882-0714 or your branch library.

 How long will the Library keep holds for me? 

The Library will hold your title(s) for 7 days.

 Can I place a hold on a title from another library system? 

You must have a valid library card for the library system that owns the title you want to hold. To get titles from other libraries, you can search and request titles from the MOBIUS catalog (Springfield-Greene County Library patrons only) or call your local library to see if they participate in Interlibrary Loan.

 

 Limiting A Search 

Limit an author, title, or subject search

  1. On the search results screen, click the "Limit Search" button at the top or bottom of the screen.
  2. Fill in one or more of the Limit Search form fields:
  • Year of publication--You can fill in either the After or Before field, or both.
  • Material type:
    • audiobook--cassette
    • audiobook--compact disc
    • book
    • book/cassette
    • cassette (music)
    • compact disc
    • cd-rom
    • dvd
    • large type
    • periodicals
    • toys
    • videocassettes
  • Language
  • Publisher
  • Where the item is located
  • Words in:
    • title
    • author
    • subject
  • You can also sort your list by date.
  1. Click the "Limit/sort items retrieved using above data".

Modify a keyword search:

  1. On the search results screen, click the "Modify Search" button at the top or bottom of the screen. You will be returned to the Keyword Search form. The form will already be filled in with your original search criteria.
  2. Change or add additional search criteria.
  3. Click the "Search" button.
 Requesting Materials Via Interlibrary Loan (Springfield-Greene County Library Only)
  1. Click on the Interlibrary Loan link on the COOLcat home page.
  2. To request a book, click on the Book link. To request articles from journals or magazines, click on Journal.
  3. Fill in the requested information.
  4. Read the copyright statement and click on the "Submit This Request" button.
  5. The library will notifiy you when the material is ready for pickup.
 Suggest Materials for Library to Purchase (Springfield-Greene County Library Only)
  1. Click on the "Suggest titles for purchase" link on the COOLcat home page.
  2. Fill out the form and click on "Submit this suggestion".
  3. The Library will contact you when the material is available for checkout.
 Print, E-mail or Save a List of Records 

You can save a list of records and then print, e-mail or save them to disk.

  1. Search your library's COOLcat Catalog for the title you wish to save.
  2. Click the "Add to Cart" button.
  3. Continue searching and adding titles to your cart until all your selections have been made.
  4. Click the "View Cart" button at the top or bottom of the screen.
  5. On the "Your Cart" page, click "Send Titles"
  6. Choose a list format:
  • Brief Display to save author, title, publisher, and call number information.
  • Full Display to save all information in a record, including locations of the title, availablity, subject headings, and notes.
  • MARC
  1. Choose where to send the list:
  • email to send to your email account
  • screen to format the list for printing from the browser
  • local disk to save to a floppy
  1. To save all the titles in your cart, click the "Send All Titles" button.
  2. To save some titles in your cart, click in the check box to the left of each title you want to send, then click the "Send Selected Titles" button.
 My Account 

 Log In to View Your Account 

  1. Click "My Account" on your library's COOLcat home page.
  2. In the first box, enter your first or last name as it appears in your library account record.
  3. Press the Tab key on your keyboard or click in the second box.
  4. In the second box, enter the number from your library card. You must enter the entire number, with no spaces. Your number will appear on the screen as a series of asterisks or other symbols.
  5. Click on the "Submit" button.

Your account will show:

 How can I see what titles I have checked out? 

  1. Click on My Account on your library's COOLcat home page.
  2. Type in your first or last name.
  3. Type in the barcode number from your library card.
  4. Click the "Submit" button.
  5. Click on the "# Items checked out" link. If the link does not appear, you do not have any items checked out.

You will see a list of the titles you have checked out and when they are due back to the library. The library does not keep records of titles you have checked out in the past.

 How can I renew titles I have checked out? 

  1. Click on My Account on the your library's COOLcat home page.
  2. Type in your first or last name.
  3. Type in the barcode number from the back of your library card.
  4. Click the "Submit" button.
  5. Click on the "# items currently checked out" link. If the link does not appear, you do not have any items checked out.
  6. To renew all titles, click the "Renew All" button. To renew some titles, click the box to the left of the title, then click the "Renew Selected Titles" button.
  7. A message will appear next to each title indicating one of the following:
  • If the item was successfully renewed, the word "Renewed" will appear in the status column along with a new due date.
  • If the item cannot be renewed, you will see a message in the status column that gives the reason for non-renewal, such as "Too Many Renewals" or "On Hold".

Don't forget to note the new due date for your items.

 How can I see what titles I have requested through Interlibrary Loan? (Springfield-Greene County Library only)

  1. Click on My Account on the COOLcat home page.
  2. Type in your first or last name.
  3. Type in the barcode number from the back of your library card.
  4. Click the "Submit" button.
  5. Click on the "# Interlibrary loan requests" link. If the link does not appear, you do not have any outstanding Interlibrary loans.

 Overdues Fines and Bills 

Displays a list of any materials on which you owe fines. Information such as title and author will be displayed along with the amount and reason for the fine.

  1. Click on My Account on your library's COOLcat home page.
  2. Type in your first or last name.
  3. Type in the barcode number from the back of your library card.
  4. Click the "Submit" button.
  5. Click on the "$ in unpaid fines and bills" link. If the link does not appear, you do not have any fines.

 Show Messages Button 

Displays any messages from the library regarding your account.

 Search the Catalog 

Click the "Search the Catalog" button to search the catalog just as you normally would. The difference is that you are "logged in". If you place choose to place holds, you will not have to enter your name and library card number for each request – only choose the pickup location.

You will also have the option to add a catalog search to Favorite Searches.

 Favorite Searches 

Favorite Searches allows you to save a catalog search for easy reference and to perform again in future visits. For example, you can do a subject search for "container gardening", then save the search. In future visits, you can perform the search again from your list of Favorite Searches. In addition, you can choose to receive an email notice when a new title matching the "container gardening" subject search is acquired by the library.

Save a Favorite Search

  1. Log in to My Account.
  2. Click the "Search Catalog" button.
  3. Perform a search.
  4. If necessary, limit your search to only your library by clicking the down arrow on the library name box, choosing your library, and clicking the "Search" button.
  5. On the search results screen, click the "Add to Favorites" button above the search results list.

View Your Favorite Searches

  1. Log in to My Account.
  2. Click the "Favorite Searches" button.
  3. You will see a list of the searches you have saved.

To perform a Favorite Search, click the Search link to the right of the search.

Receive an email when the library gets a new title matching one of your Favorite Searches

  1. Log in to My Account.
  2. Click the "Favorite Searches" button.
  3. Click in the box under the Mark for Email column to the left of the search
  4. Click the "Update Favorite Searches" button.

Remove a Favorite Search

  1. Log in to My Account.
  2. Click the "Favorite Searches" button.
  3. Click in the box under the "Mark for Remove" column to the left of the search.
  4. Click the "Update Favorite Searches" button.

 Log Out 

Click the "Log Out" button to log out of your account. When using the My Account feature at a public computer, it is important to click the "Log Out" button to protect your privacy.

 Troubleshooting 

 Browsers and Browser Settings 

  1. You must use Netscape 4.0 or Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher to view your account, place holds, renew titles, etc....
  2. Your browser must be configured to accept cookies.
  3. AOL users should read the special instructions for AOL users.

 AOL Users 

AOL users must use either a Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator browser to place holds, renew materials or view their record. Please follow the instructions for using an alternate browser.

 "Validation Has Expired" Message 

A "Validation Has Expired" error message does not mean that there is a problem with your library card.

  • If you use an AOL, CompuServe, or Wal-Mart browser, please see the instructions for using an alternate browser.
  • If you do not use one of these browsers, please make sure your browser is configured to accept cookies.

 "There is a problem with your library record. Please see a librarian." Message 

This message usually means that your library card needs to be updated. Springfield-Greene County Library patrons who receive this message should call (417) 882-0714 to verify that the Library has your correct address and phone number(s). Patrons of other consortium libraries should contact their local library.

 "Registration Has Expired" Message 

All Springfield-Greene County Library cards are updated once a year to make sure we have our patrons' correct addresses, phone numbers, etc.... Call (417) 882-0714 to update your card.

 "No requestable items" Message 

This message means the title you requested is not available for checkout.

You may see this message if you attempt to place a hold on a title for which the status is "In Library Use", or in instances where the book has been damaged.

You may also see this message if you attempt to place a hold on a title that is on order. If the title you requested has no location, call number or status listed, it is on order, and no online holds may be placed on it. Please call the Library, and ask the Reference Staff to place a hold on the title for you.
